About the Game

As a cat, you typically start your morning with a nice bowl of cat food, served to you by your faithful human companion. But this morning was different, you discover that your human has chosen to sleep in rather than prepare your meal. This is unacceptable, you decided to teach them a lesson with your patented Catrate Chop.

A 3D rhythm game implementing 2D UI that I created with a team in a 2-day game jam by ABK's SOMOS. The game is inspired by the shared experience among cat-owners of being woken up each morning by their voracious feline companions.

Gameplay


In order to wake up your owner, you must match the rhythm of the music. As cat paws rain from the top of the screen, match the tempo of the background music in order to hit your owner awake from their slumber. Their awake level is shown within the Wake-A-Meter.

When considering the gameplay elements, I decided to integrate the user interation with the game through keypresses of WASD. In order for this element to be easily accessible to players of when they are pressing the button on the keys, the buttons should have a change between pressed mode and unpressed mode.

Additionally, I managed the flowing of notes rolling down on the screen. This signified the timing for when the player should press the keys in the game. If the key, or paw, is no longer present in the bottom of the screen, that illustrates an accurate keypress.

Overall Thoughts


In the end, my team and I successfully created a playable game that encompassed all of our essential features as well as the additional stretch goals. Our enthusiasm and deep appreciation goes out to the organizers and mentors who orchestrated this remarkable IGNITE 2023 Game Jam hosted by SOMOS - part of the Activision Blizzard Entertainment King network for proud Latina, Latino, Latine, and allies. This experience has been a profound learning journey for us.
